ブラウンさんはアメリカ人ですか。

The particle か at the end of a sentence turns that sentence into a question.

ブラウンさんはアメリカ人ですか。
Are you American, Mr. Brown?

Also note that while the word “you” is used often in English, In Japanese the equivalent phrase is the listener’s name followed by さん.

yes/no questions

A simple sentence that has been converted into a question by adding か simply asks if the information presented is correct or not.

ホワイトさんは学生ですか。
Are you a student Mr. White?

はい、学生です。
Yes, I’m a student.

or

いいえ、学生じゃありません。
No, I’m not student.

Questions asking for information

If a question includes a question word such as どなた (who), the answer should follow the same pattern as the question, with the question word swapped for the required information.

どなたですか。
Who is that?

かわぐちです。
It’s Kawaguchi.
